Market Your Small Business
Does a picture really say a thousand words? We aren’t always sure, but we can tell you it stands a pretty good chance of reaching more than a few thousand people!
Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms in today’s market. If you aren’t using it for market your small business online, you might be missing out on reaching a good percentage of your target demographics.
It has become a vital part of many businesses’ brand-building programs, especially companies with a very visual product. Oh, we know that old social-media gripe about not being interested in what everyone has for breakfast, but imagine how awesome your professional chef makes an Eggs Benedict.

Expand your reach visually
A photo-sharing mobile app, Instagram recently surpassed the 400-million mark for users. eMarketer projected last spring that 77.6 million people in the United States will access their Instagram account this year. That’s 27.6 percent of the population, a huge chunk of this country!
Like many social media platforms, Instagram has changed the way we interact with each other. It gives us a very visual way to communicate our message and brand as small businesses.
Here are some tips to making the most of your Instagram account and build your reputation among your followers:
1. Plan your photos and videos
Instagram fits into your overall content marketing strategy, so you should make sure it has a spot on your editorial calendar. Plan your content ahead of time and ensure you’re putting the best face on your brand. Match your content with sales, special events and holidays, and pay attention to which posts your followers engage with the most.
2. Interact with your followers
It’s always a good idea to give back the love you get from your followers. Follow them back, like and comment on their photos. When you engage with your customers, you make it easy for their friends and followers to find you, too.
3. Don’t forget the hashtags
If you’ve been on Twitter for a while, hashtags are already part of your content marketing strategy. Users can either search for specific hashtags or click on the tags in posts to find related content. Your photos and videos are just a click away to help new users to find you. Make sure your hashtags are relevant to your brand and the service or product you’re promoting. And don’t go too crazy … two to three hashtags should be enough, even though Instagram allows a maximum of 30.
4. Run a contest
Instagram is a great place to engage customers and followers with a content. Create a specific hashtag and ask your followers to post their own pictures (Yahoo! User-generated content!). It’s as easy as searching the hashtag to find the posts and pick your winner. You could run a content and ask everyone to caption one of your own posts, or create one of your own and ask your followers to share with your friends.
5. Give them a deal
Post exclusive deals in your Instagram posts, offering your followers exclusive discounts. Create an image or video with instructions on how to use the deal — a coupon code to use on your e-commerce website or a code word to use at the register when they’re paying for your product in-store.
6. Have some fun
One of the keys to social media success is being friendly, engaging and fun. Instagram is not a place to be as stuffy as your three-piece suit. Give your followers a taste of the behind-the-scenes action, show them your employees enjoying their day at work, and strut your stuff.
Don’t be all work and no play. Show off the human side of your business and your followers will love you for it.
