Ad Extensions 101: What You Need to Know

Ad Extensions 101: What You Need to Know

What You Need to Know About Ad Extensions

Ad extensions are the extra information that come with a Google Adwords ad. For example, an ad may display links to specific categories on your site, directions to your business from the user’s location, or your phone number. All business owners who spend money on PPC marketing should include ad extensions because they don’t cost more money and they strengthen the ad. To get started with ad extensions, here’s what you need to know:

You’ll Have Limited Options If You Don’t Enable All Features

The first thing you should do is enable all features in your Adwords or you will be provided with fewer extension options. When you’re setting up a new campaign, go to the settings tab and select “all features” under “type”. This will give you access to all possible ad extensions. If you already have a campaign running and want to change it to all features, click edit and change “type” to “all features.”

Access the Ad Extensions Tab Under a Campaign

It’s easy to create an ad extension; just click on the “ad extensions” tab under a campaign. Understanding what all of the fields mean, however, is another story. Different categories you will see are:

  • View – An extension that allows you to set up location information and site links.
  • Segments – Segments provide data on the best times, devices, and networks for each extension. This data is based on your results from advertisement extensions, so it’s catered to your specific business.
  • Columns – You can customize how you view your ad extensions dashboard with columns. For example, you may change the order of data and add or delete metrics.

Ad extensions allow you to get the most out of your PPC campaigns. They provide additional information that can convince a user to click on your advertisement. If two businesses show up in search for a service he/she is looking for and only one of them provides a directions button, he/she will be more inclined to opt for the business with the directions extension because it’s convenient. Using ad extensions improve the user experience.
