In order for people to easily view your website content, they need a way to access the other pages. The best way is to create a navigation bar near the top of the website. Make sure to have the various pages clearly labeled, such as “Contact” or “About Us.” No one will want to spend a minute looking for the information they want to find. If they can’t find it on your website, they’ll get it somewhere else.

DO: Make the most important information easy to see

When a person first visits your website, they will scan the page looking for key information. What industry are you in? What do you do? What makes you stand out from everyone else? Why should they choose you? A common design choice now is writing a sentence or two near the top of the page to describe what the company does. The sentence(s) use a larger font than the supporting text so that the reader can find it right away. If the tagline interests the reader, they will read on.

DO: Limit the information requested for account sign ups, newsletters, and other forms

When you are trying to get people to enter information, keep the process simple. If you can, ask only for their name, email address, and one other piece of information. If it is an account sign up form, use the third slot for password creation. A contact form may have a third slot so they can write their question or concern. A newsletter sign up might not even need a third slot. The more information you ask for, the more likely they will not follow through. You can always request more information in the future. It is crucial to hook first-time visitors as soon as possible so that you can reel them in later.
