6 Step Checklist for On-Page SEO
#1 Start Title with Keyword, if Possible
Include your keyword early in your title, but it needs to read well and make sense. Using the piple “|” works, meaning the title would read as: Keyword| Title.
#2 Put Keyword in URL Permalink
Google has shared that the first 3-5 words in a URL are given more weight! Instead of having the full title as the permalink, make the slug short and descriptive by just changing it to the keyword.
Therefore, the URL link would read as: “http://yourdomain.com/keyword”.
Quick note: Don’t go back and change your previous blog post slugs…just do this moving forward!
#3 Use Keyword Early in Your Post & Throughout
Work the keyword in the first 100 words of your post, preferably the first sentence and also throughout your content. Again, you want it to sound natural so don’t force it. A good rule of thumb is to apply the 1% density rule. For every 100 words, use your keyword once.
Be sure to use the keyword exactly as it is, however, Google is getting smarter with semantics search therefore synonyms are working just as well!
#4 Images Certainly Help
Multi-media in posts including videos and images are great sources to engage your readers and complement your content. It’s natural to put pictures that is relevant to the keyword so the opportunity will be there for keyword placement. The big feature here is the “Alt text”. Describe the image using your keyword, however, if it doesn’t fit, don’t use it.
#5 Meta Description
Just to preface, this does not affect on-page SEO. It will not boost rankings, however, it will increase clicks and engagement. The Meta Description is what appears below the title in the search engine. It tells your potential readers what to expect in your article. It’s wise to include the keyword in a compelling statement so it appeals to your target audience. This is where you sell or promote your content to get viewership!
#6 Keep Your Blog Current with High-Quality Content
This is probably the most important. An active blog is necessary for a successful SEO initiative. Create a content calendar where you are blogging daily in your business to relay fresh, relevant content to the market place. This is what Google wants. Their goal is to make sure the search results produce articles that are related to the keyword and rich in value.
