What is Social Media?
Social Media is essentially the way that our society creates, shares, and exchanges information and ideas across virtual communities or networks. The four most commonly used social media networks are Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn, but there are countless other networks out there used by thousands of people everyday for various purposes.
Without exaggerating too much, social media has basically taken over the world. If you are not connected in some way to a social media network, you are a rare breed in today’s world. People are constantly on their phones, tablets or laptops, desiring to share with the world or their “followers/friends” every single thing that happens throughout their day. With the ever-evolving advances in technology, one can quite literally share their entire life with the world via social media. Whether it’s through videos, images or plain old text, we have the technological power at our fingers to share whatever we want with whoever we want.
A New, More Connected World
Social media has connected the world in ways never imagined years ago. Common folk are able to follow along and get an inside glimpse of the lives of their favorite athletes, celebrities, politicians and friends or school mates. The leader of the free world has a Twitter account.
With the invention of “hashtags” there has been a door opened for the public to raise awareness about a certain issue or cause. A great example of this would be the wave of financial support and awareness that was raised for ALS this past summer. This whole movement started with one person, who created a hashtag, got others to get behind his cause, and made it so popular that it reached top athletes, celebrities and politicians. All of this was because of social media.
While social media can be used for so much good and is a terrific way to stay connected to friends and loved ones, there is also great risk and responsibility that comes with it. One must be very careful with what they share, because once it is “out there,” it’s out there.
