What is On-Page SEO (And Why Do You Need It)?

What is On-Page SEO (And Why Do You Need It)?

Search engine optimization sounds easy, when the concept is first explained. Search engines are like managers, and all of the web pages on the Internet are the job applicants. The search engine looks at the search terms typed into the box, and then goes through all the pages to see who best fits what it is the searcher is looking for. Once it’s found all of the pages that fit the search, it runs down a checklist to order them from the best pages to the worst. Search engine optimization, or SEO, is making sure that your website fits all of the criteria the search engine is looking for, and thus is more likely to be placed at the front of the search results.

So What’s On-Page SEO?

On-page SEO is a term that refers to all of the different sections of your website that need to be optimized. Most website owners know they need to use search terms and key words in the title of a post, as well as in the body of their text, but those are just the tip of the ice berg. That isn’t just a metaphor either; those two sections represent the SEO that readers see, but there’s a great deal more beneath the surface that you also need to optimize.

Some of these “below the surface” sections of your page include:

– Title Tags: Your title tags will be scanned by search engines along with everything else, which is why it’s important to make sure your tags have the best possible keywords in them.

– Meta Descriptions: While not as important for your page rank as they once were, meta descriptions are a succinct way for you to bring across what your page and posts are about. As such, these sections need to be tweaked for maximum impact.

– URL Structure: The URL to your site, and to the pages in your site, is important. Straightforward addresses like “MySite.com/Gardening_Life_Hacks” is going to be much easier to search than something messy like “MySite.com/index37i?_LH”. The cleaner your URLs, the better they rank.

– Heading Tags: The headings within your content should be wrapped in H1 tags, because that will draw the attention of the search engine. It’s sort of like highlighting an area you really want an inspector to pay attention to, because you worked hard to make it stand out.

These are just some of the examples of the locations you need to pay attention to for on-page SEO according to this source. While it might seem like a bunch of busy work, especially considering all the backlinking, social media promotion, and page speed concerns you already have to deal with, on-page SEO can be pretty rewarding. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, though, which is why if you have concerns about your on-page SEO you should contact us today!
